Welcome to
Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The ISLS Annual Meeting 2021 will be fully online

Located in the heart of Europe in the dynamic metropolitan region of the Ruhr area, the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) with its 20 faculties is home to 5,700 employees and over 43,000 students from over 130 countries. The RUB campus represents a conjunction of science, research and student life on a grand scale. From the NRW state parliament’s decision of incorporation in the 1960’s to the Excellence Initiative: RUB’s history of more than 50 years is a track record of success. Outstanding achievements, discoveries and accolades have been the result of networking and dedicated teamwork.

Humane. Accomplished. Open to the world. RUB.

Research

The RUB rates among the best research institutes on an international level. By breaking new ground, it offers dedicated academics and scientists the opportunity to thrive in their chosen fields. The RUB Research Campus incorporates Research Departments that jointly conduct research into one specific area–across all disciplines.

Audimax

The Auditorium Maximum (Audimax) is the centre and the architectural highlight of the RUB. Therefore, it is the place for large and prestigious university events like concerts or award ceremonies. The spacious foyer is the perfect location for exhibitions and receptions.

Botanical Garden

Whether you are out to explore the fascinating diversity of plants from all over the world or whether you just want some peace in nature, the Botanical Garden of the RUB is an oasis. Covering an area of 13 hectares and harbouring over 10,000 different plant species and several tropical glasshouses, it is one of Germany’s largest botanical gardens.

Chinese Garden "Qian Yuan"

The Chinese Garden, which is well known outside the boundaries of Bochum and comprises an area of 1,000 square meters, was a present to the RUB by its partner university Tongji-University in Shanghai on their 25th anniversary. The garden’s name “Qian Yuan” goes back to the famous writer Tao Qian (365-427 n. Chr.).

The RUB Community

What is it that makes the Ruhr-Universität stand out? That’s obvious: the community of people. They work together to broaden their understanding and to learn from each other, regardless of hierarchies, origins and discipline limitations. The RUB is an established player in the international scientific community. We truly live the “universitas” principle, the spirit of mutual and shared learning.
