Reflecting the Past and Embracing the Future
Bochum, Germany, June 8-11
Workshops: June 1-7
Previously, there were two bi-annual meetings organized by ISLS: the International Conference of the Learning Sciences (ICLS) in even years and the Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) conference in the odd years. From 2021 on, one annual meeting of the ISLS will be organized with two programs: Learning Sciences (LS) and Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). As ISLS moves into its young adulthood, its membership increasingly reflects breadth and depth across multiple perspectives, types of research, topics, and settings. The two-program format provides an opportunity for the ISLS community as a whole to convene on an annual basis to share their work. Each program will keep publishing its own proceedings, maintaining the traditions and building on established scientific recognition. The types of submissions and formats for submissions follow past practices of ICLS and CSCL programs, i.e., symposia, full papers, short papers, and posters as well as demonstration sessions (details below).
Deciding whether to submit to the LS or the CSCL Program
The ISLS Annual Meeting is a platform for researchers and practitioners who are interested in learning experiences across schools, homes, workplaces and communities, and who seek to understand how learning is enabled by knowledge, tools, collaboration, networks, and social structures. In this context, the CSCL program addresses and invites work with a joint focus on technology and collaboration. CSCL has gained considerable recognition also in the field of computer science and this is one part of its community identity. All other submissions within the general scope should be submitted to the LS program. This includes submissions with a stronger focus on technology that do not particularly address collaborative learning.
For Papers, Posters, and Symposia, authors have to make a choice as to which one of the programs they target: CSCL or LS. A proposal can be submitted to one program (CSCL or LS) only. All other proposals and applications including pre-conference workshops, tutorials, and interactive sessions as well as Doctoral Consortium, Early Career Workshop, Mid-Career Workshop are submitted to the ISLS Annual Meeting without distinguishing between CSCL and LS
